THE LONDON SECURITY EXERCISE
How the Crisis Will Function
The London Security Exercise is a crisis simulation, which means that all committees will share a similar focus. The crisis control room will generate the events that will shape debate. These may be released to you in the form of news releases, messages from your home government or even a visit from an external figure.
Every time new information emerges you will need to think about how your character should react to it. Will they take a hawkish or dovish position in relation to the military? Will they remain loyal to the current regime or not? Will they support punitive or conciliatory diplomatic measures? This will create the debate in your committee room.
However, debate is not confined to your committee. Through your portfolio, you are representing interests and institutions that are not present and you have their power at your disposal. Use them to influence the situation to your advantage.
Furthermore, this is a highly politically interlinked situation, and you will need to create relationships with other committees and the individuals in them, with or without the knowledge of your peers. This interaction will allow you an even greater range of potential action.
Committee staff will be present within the room at all times and will be constantly interacting with crisis staff in order to bring you the best and most responsive possible committee experience. Thus - if you want to set a policy in motion – talk to them or send them a note, they will make sure it is implemented and ensure that you know the results of your action as soon as possible.
- If you want to publicise a decision by your committee, staff can arrange for press releases to be issued to everyone.
- If you want to get a message to someone in another committee, give it to staff and it will be delivered for you (subject to approval by staff).
- If someone in another committee wants to get in touch with you, the message will come via staff.
- If you want to get information from your department or home government, send them a note and you should receive a response.
(Note: this is not a substitute for good research!)
Remember all these points, use them to your advantage and you will succeed!
