Background guides can be found on the Committees Overview/Guides page
Dear Delegates,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the third annual session of the London Security Exercise at the London School of Economics & Political Science.
The London Security Exercise is a particularly specialised conference in the form of a joint crisis, whereby six committees interact across the crisis in both proactive and reactive ways, which allows for a simulation of a geopolitical crisis that governments and institutions may realistically face, with several concurrent circumstances influencing policy-making. The high-paced nature of a joint crisis provokes exciting debate we hope you’ll enjoy.
The focus will be on the “Crisis in the Balkans”, and will be set contemporarily in February 2012. We will be looking at the region in its broader context, exploring the interests of a multitude of actors.
Since the break-up of the old Socialist Republic Yugoslavia, conflicts have been occurring across the Balkans, encompassing genocide and war. With Kosovo having unilaterally declared independence in 2008, and Serbia still firmly against that declaration, talks on joining the European Union have fallen through in recent months. The clashes in North Kosovo have been increasing, and ethnic Serbs within Kosovo have submitted requests for Russian citizenship, raising concerns that stability within the region is faltering.
With the complex situation in the Balkans continually changing, the joint crisis will be a challenge for delegates. We hope you will join us here at the LSE to take on the challenge, and look forward to receiving your applications.

Secretary-General, London Security Exercise 2012
